As a side note: My wife and I just got our passports renewed. Passports are good for ten years. If your passport has expired and was issued over 15 years ago, you can't just mail in an application; you have to go to a passport agent for a new one. We went to the nearest post office to get pictures taken and to file the applications. Amazingly enough we had our new passports in our hands in one week.
If you need info on applying for passports, start with the United States Department of State Passport Home Page. This will tell you what you need to know, and it even has handy online forms you can fill out and print to take with you when you visit the passport agent -- a lifesaver if your handwriting is as nasty as mine.
